One hundred and fifty year’s ago Bishop George Hills, the first Bishop of British Columbia, marked a historic occasion for the Anglican Church of Canada: The occasion - the laying of the corner stone for
Christ Church, Anglican in Hope, BC.
To commemorate this moment a note, sealed in a jar, was placed near the foundation. Christ Church Anglican & National Historic Site will commemorate this historic occasion with a special service on Oct. 23, 2011 at 10am, Bishop Michael Ingham will be here to lead a service with the form and language used in 1861; parish members will be wearing clothing reminiscent of the era.
All are welcome to join us on this special day of commemoration. Following the conclusion of the service Christ Church will plant a time capsule, complete with the words of Bishop George Hills 150 years ago. Tours by local historian Darla Dickinson will follow the burying of the capsule and refreshments will be served.
Christ Church’s history is in many ways a reflection of the time, and tells the story of a small town as it struggled to gain an identity in a time of unrest. When the church was completed in 1861, in time for consecration in November, there were only two businesses and twenty people left in town. The decision was made to persevere, to retain Reverend Pringle and regular church services because it was felt that Hope’s location and natural beauty would restore it as a place of significance.
Christ Church Anglican & National Historic Site will also host a smaller celebration on November 1 to commemorate the date of consecration. Everyone is encouraged to come out, to take part in this historic occasion and to learn about the role that Christ Church played in the early history of the Diocese of New Westminster.
