On Saturday July 6, the qathet Pride Society organized the first Pride Parade in Powell River, and the parish of St. David & St. Paul was the first of two churches represented in a long line of community groups, societies, allies and friends. Marchers, walked, strutted, sang and danced down Marine Drive to celebrate the rich LGBTQ2S+ diversity in the qathet region. SD&P carried the Diocesan flag alongside several Pride flags and one gorgeous rainbow parish banner made by a quilter in the parish.
The parade is the next step (lots of them actually!) for this small but mighty parish as it expands its visibility in Powell River. The parish offers a weekly book study in two locations in town: a coffee shop near the marina and a local brewery in the Townsite neighbourhood. Participants select the book topic of their choice and welcome anyone to join in for conversation. Other community outreach projects are being developed to continue demonstrating what the abundance of a loving God looks like.
Plans are already under way for next year’s Pride parade. The Rev. Laurel Dahill, the Vicar of the parish was quick to add, “If you thought this year was good, wait until you see what we do next year.”
