February 23rd-27th, 2015, was a busy week for the Archives of the Diocese of New Westminster and Provincial Synod of BC and Yukon. The archives’ space at the Vancouver School of Theology (VST) is due to transfer to the University of British Columbia at the end of March and the new archives space in Shaughnessy is still under construction. As a result, the archival records as well as the archives’ furnishings had to be put in temporary storage.
Over the course of 3 days, the 3,000+ boxes of records were transferred into storage at the Library and Archives Canada federal records centre in Burnaby, and the parish of St. Mary’s, Kerrisdale generously made room to temporarily store the archives’ furnishings.
While archives volunteers the Ven. Ronald and Sandra Harrison kept an eye on the loading of the records and furnishings at VST, Archivist Melanie Delva oversaw their offloading and shelving at the federal records centre. The records and furnishings will remain in storage until the new Diocesan Offices and Archives space in the refurbished accommodations on the St. John’s, Shaughnessy are completed, at which point they will be moved into the new space. Until that time, Melanie will have no access to the records and will therefore be unable to field research requests (with the exception of some vital parish records which have been digitized). However, she can be reached in her temporary home at the Synod Office at archives@vancouver.anglican.ca or 604-684-6306 ext.230.
