This position was created to assist the Diocese to continue its work of both restoring and building new relationships with the Indigenous Community. The renewed engagement created by the Truth and Reconciliation Event in Vancouver in September 2013 highlighted the need and the desire for relationships to be developed and strengthened through dialogue and education. Amongst the top three priorities of Bishop Melissa's episcopate is Indigenous Justice and she plans to work with Brander, listening and learning in order to develop an action plan and goal for this minsitry.
Brander is a member of the Cree Nation, Peguis Band. Brander brings a wealth of experience to the position. He has worked in cultural education in secondary schools, in First Nations communities, in correctional centres, as a cross cultural communications consultant and currently as the Indigenous Relations Coordinator with the Mennonite Church of BC/Canada.
