The 127 Society for Housing in March was one of three recipients of a cheque for over $24,000, funds remaining from the windup of Stewards in Action.

The other groups receiving the same amount were the Coming Home Society, which operates a home for recovering young Aboriginal women, and the South Fraser Community Services Society, which provides services in the Whalley area of Surrey.

The Stewards in Action (SIA) program came to an end at the end of 2005. For about 15 years SIA had funded many of the diocese’s outreach ministries.

In January, about $73,000 remained in the SIA fund, which was split amongst the three groups. At the same time that SIA was terminated, Diocesan Synod set up the “Going the Extra Mile” (or “GEM”) program.

Contributions to the 127 Society for Housing, or the two other groups, can now be given through parishes via GEM. There are certain advantages in giving through the diocese, including the ability, at times, to leverage other funds. However, money can also be sent directly to the 127 Housing Society,
