We will gather at the Synod Office, 1410 Nanton Avenue in Vancouver's Shaughnessy neighbourhood.

A $30 fee includes lunch

(vegetarian & gluten free options available)

Overview of the Day

Two keynote speakers will share their experiences of living well with and/or supporting a person with a mental illness diagnosis.

Sara Lapsely

Sara received her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from UBC in 2015. She works at the BC Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, where her passion is providing clinical care and mental health education to individuals with severe mental illness who have come in conflict with the law.  She is an active member of the Collaborative Research Team to Study Psychosocial Issues in Bipolar Disorder, and is a volunteer with the Disaster Psychosocial Services Team. Sara hopes to address stigma by being open about mental illness, and share the message that recovery is probable.

Sandra Wiens

Sandra Wiens has a PhD in Counselling Psychology and is a Registered Psychologist and instructor in the Counselling Psychology program at the University of British Columbia. She has personally experienced, as well as researched and published on the experience of mental illness in the family. Sandra will share her story of how her life has been shaped through the challenges and uncertainties associated with mental illness in her family and what she has learned both personally and through her professional work.  She will also speak to the important role that her faith has played in coping with the challenges she has faced.

In the afternoon, you will choose from 4 workshops:

  • further discussion with either of the 2 keynote speaker
  • learning & coaching in listening & communications skills while responding to people when mental health is languishing.
  • a presentation about the similarities and differences between depression and spiritual lassitude (acedia)
